The question of the length of recess is sometimes debated by students and teachers. Right now, recess is only 30 minutes, but it should be longer.
Having a longer recess would give students more time to exercise and a longer break from the computer screen. Also, a longer recess gives students more time to socialize.
“I think recess should be longer because you get to shake off all [your] energy so when you go back to class, you’ll be more ready to do work,” fifth grade student Samier Abdou-Essa said.

Did you know that sitting in front of the computer for most of the day hurts one’s eyes? Having a longer recess would not only let students shake off their energy, but the exercise is good for their bodies since their eyes are taking a break.
“I think recess should be longer and the reason why is because for one, being outside and being active is very healthy, and [two], it is important to keep moving no matter what kind of exercise or activity you’re doing. So, I am definitely a believer that recess should be longer,” Physical Education Coach Justino said.
During recess, students used to be able to go on the playgrounds. But because of COVID-19, they can’t as much so now most students play soccer. This time during recess and PE with Coach Justino can be their daily exercise, so that they can use the extra time in recess to read and finish up schoolwork.
“Recess should not be longer because I feel we give plenty of time as it is. We are very good about making sure you get your PE activity in everyday, so that is a gracious amount of time and then at 2:00 [p.m.], you can go home and have recess the rest of the day”

Although it is important to make recess longer, some individuals feel that recess is already long enough.
“Recess should not be longer because I feel we give plenty of time as it is. We are very good about making sure you get your PE activity in everyday, so that is a gracious amount of time and then at 2:00 [p.m.], you can go home and have recess the rest of the day,” fifth grade teacher Mrs. Budd said.
Even though students have more free time at home, having a longer recess during school would be a longer break for teachers along with students. Instead of having the usual 30-minute recess, 60 minutes should be given to provide students and teachers with time to socialize away from the screen. Having a longer recess would be overall beneficial to students and teachers at HHE.
